Central vacuum inlet not working while the power unit still runs
First define what “not working” means: the unit will not start from that inlet, the unit starts but that inlet has little or no airflow, or the power unit will not stop after the hose is removed. Each symptom follows a different diagnostic path.
Quick answer
If the same hose works at other inlets, the power unit itself is probably not the first place to look. No airflow at one inlet points toward that inlet or its branch pipe. No start signal at one inlet points toward the hose connection, inlet contacts, or low-voltage control path. A unit that runs continuously is a separate control problem.
What does “one central vacuum inlet is not working” mean?
The phrase can describe three different failures. Identify the exact symptom before touching a bag, filter, hose, inlet, or power unit.
The unit starts, but this inlet has no suction
When the same hose has normal airflow elsewhere, focus on the affected inlet, the short elbow behind it, or its dedicated pipe branch.
The unit works elsewhere but will not start here
This pattern points toward the hose-to-inlet connection, the inlet's activation contacts, or the low-voltage control path serving that location.
The power unit keeps running with every hose removed
Check whether the unit's manual switch is set to ON. If it is not, a low-voltage short or internal control fault may be keeping the relay energized.
The same hose fails at more than one inlet
Do not condemn an inlet until the bare hose has been compared at multiple locations or a known-good compatible hose has been tested.
Use this five-minute test to isolate the failure
Change only one variable at a time. Use the same hose, remove the wand and floor tool, and compare the affected inlet with two inlets that normally work.

If the power unit starts but one inlet has no suction
The motor sound proves only that the power unit received a start command. It does not prove that air can travel through the affected branch.
- Use the same bare hose at another inlet. Normal airflow elsewhere makes the affected inlet or its branch the likely problem area.
- Inspect only the visible inlet opening. A larger object can lodge in the tight elbow immediately behind an inlet.
- Check that the hose cuff seats completely. A damaged or mismatched cuff can leak air even though the system starts.
- Listen for a whistle or air leak. A poor inlet seal or separated branch fitting can reduce airflow locally.
- Stop at concealed tubing. Do not remove a direct-connect inlet, drill into a wall, or push aggressive clearing tools into the pipe.

If one inlet will not start the power unit
If the same hose starts the unit from other wall inlets, the power unit has power and can respond to at least part of the home's control circuit. The affected location may not be completing the start signal.
Seat the hose normally
Insert the hose fully and rotate it into its intended operating position. Some switched hoses must align correctly with the inlet contacts. Do not force a cuff that does not fit.
Try a compatible known-good hose
If both hoses fail only at the same inlet, the inlet or its control path becomes more likely. If one hose fails everywhere, the hose is the better suspect.
Look, but do not probe
With the hose removed, look for obvious damage or debris from the room side. Do not place a coin, screwdriver, meter probe, or wire across inlet contacts.
Do not remove the inlet
Low-voltage wire is normally routed with the tubing, while direct-connect inlet assemblies can also contain household voltage. Diagnosis behind the cover belongs to a qualified technician.
If the power unit keeps running after the hose is removed
This is not the same as one dead inlet. Broan-NuTone's owner guidance identifies a manual switch left in the ON position or an electrical short in the system as possible causes of continuous operation. Cyclo Vac troubleshooting also uses the low-voltage control connection to distinguish a wiring fault from an internal electronic problem—but that diagnostic should be performed by a technician.
- Remove every hose and close every inlet. Confirm no retractable-hose valve, utility inlet, or automatic dustpan is still engaged.
- Check only the normal switch position. Use OFF, AUTO, or the equivalent position named in the exact power-unit manual.
- If the motor still runs, unplug the power unit. Do not leave an unattended motor running continuously.
- Request control-circuit diagnosis. A shorted low-voltage wire, stuck relay, or electronic control issue is not a reason to open wall inlets or the power-unit housing yourself.
What is safe to check—and when to stop
Keep the diagnosis external
- Compare the same bare hose at several inlets
- Fully seat and normally rotate a compatible hose cuff
- Try a known-good compatible hose
- Look for visible debris at the inlet opening
- Close unused inlets, retractable hoses, and dustpans
- Check the ordinary power-unit switch position
- Record the power-unit model and inlet type
Do not enter wiring or concealed piping
- A direct-connect inlet is cracked, loose, hot, or discolored
- The electric powerhead loses power at one inlet
- The power unit runs continuously
- One branch remains blocked after external checks
- You hear arcing, buzzing, or abnormal motor noise
- A breaker trips or there is a burning odor
- Any inlet plate, relay, control board, or wiring must be opened
Does the problem need a hose, an inlet, or service?
A replacement part is appropriate only after the failed component has been isolated.
One hose fails at every inlet
If a known-good compatible hose starts the unit and pulls normally at the same locations, compare replacement hoses by cuff type, length, handle, powerhead connection, and voltage configuration.
Both hoses fail at one location
When both work elsewhere, request an inlet and low-voltage control diagnosis. Direct-connect hardware may also require qualified work on its separate household-voltage supply.
The unit starts, but airflow is absent locally
Normal suction elsewhere points toward the inlet elbow, a branch obstruction, or a local air leak. Concealed line work is a service call.
