Common Central Vacuum Problems We Fix

If Yours Is Doing Any of These, We Can Help

  • No suction or weak suction — often caused by a clog in the tubing, a full canister, or a worn motor
  • System won't turn on — could be an electrical issue, a tripped breaker, or a failed control board
  • Motor running but no airflow — typically a blockage somewhere in the in-wall tubing
  • Loud or unusual noises — often a sign of a motor bearing failure or debris stuck in the unit
  • Inlet valves not working — valve replacements and repairs for all major inlet styles
  • Unit turns on and off unexpectedly — relay, wiring, or low-voltage circuit issues
  • Canister leaking dust or debris — seal replacements and canister servicing

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Do you service brands you didn't install?
Yes — we work on every major central vacuum brand including VacuMaid, Beam, NuTone, Vacuflo, Honeywell, MD Manufacturing, Cyclovac, Hayden, and Electrolux Central. It doesn't matter who installed it.
Can you come to my house, or do I have to bring the power unit in?
Both options are available. For most repairs, the easiest path is to bring the power unit into our shop — it lets us bench-test it under controlled conditions. If the issue is in the in-wall tubing, inlet valves, or the system can't be moved, we offer in-home service throughout the Farmington Valley (within 25 miles of Avon).
What if I can't get the power unit out of the basement or garage?
Give us a call and we'll figure it out together. Most VacuMaid, Beam, and NuTone units detach from the wall mount with a few screws or a quick-release bracket — we can talk you through it on the phone. If it's truly stuck or you'd rather not handle it, we can come out.
How long do central vacuum power units typically last?
A well-maintained central vacuum can run for 20 years or more. Motors are the most common wear item — they typically last 8–12 years on a heavily used system, longer on light-use homes. The rest of the system (tubing, inlets, hoses) often outlives the motor by decades.
What's the most common problem you see?
Loss of suction — and 9 times out of 10 it's a clog somewhere in the tubing rather than a motor problem. Worth checking the canister and tubing inlets before assuming the worst.
Do you carry parts for older systems?
Yes — we stock or can order parts for systems going back to the 1970s and '80s, including older NuTone, Beam, and Electrolux Central units. Call ahead with your model number and we'll check.
Will you call me before doing the work?
Always. We diagnose the unit first and call you back to talk through what we found. No work begins without your approval.
Can you replace my power unit if it's beyond repair?
Yes — we sell and install VacuMaid central vacuum systems, and most replacements use the existing in-wall tubing and inlets, which keeps the install straightforward. We'll walk you through what makes sense for your home.
