A small canister body doesn't mean a small footprint. Plan for the parked wand, hose loop, second floorhead and tools before picking a canister for your closet.
The canister body slides onto the closet floor like it was made for it. Then the wand hits the shelf, the hose flops into the doorway and the spare floorhead ends up living behind the boots. Small body, surprisingly big personality.
Storage deserves a spot in the buying comparison, right next to suction and filtration. Here's how to check the whole setup before it comes home.
Key takeaways
- A small canister body doesn't guarantee a small storage footprint. Measure the complete stored arrangement.
- Measure the closet opening and the route out, not just the space inside.
- The park position for cleaning breaks isn't automatically the right long-term storage position. Follow the manual.
- Give the hose a loose, unforced loop and never store heavy things on top of it.
- Plan a reachable home for the second floorhead and the small tools.
How much closet space does a canister vacuum need?
More than the body. Miele lists the Guard M1 Cat & Dog body at 19 1/2 inches wide, 11 1/8 inches deep and 8 7/8 inches tall, which sounds tiny until you add the parked wand, a hose loop and a second floorhead.
Measure the closet opening as well as the space inside. You should be able to lift the machine out without dragging its hose across everything else on the floor.
What takes up room in a stored canister vacuum
Rule of thumb from our showroom: how much each part typically adds to the closet footprint once the machine is put away. Not measurements of any specific model.
The body is the part everyone measures, and rarely the part that decides whether the closet door closes.
Where do the wand and floorhead go?
On the body, if the model allows it. SEBO says the Airbelt E's hose and telescopic tube, connected to the parquet brush, turbo head or combination nozzle, can be stored on the canister's underside or backside housing. It says much the same of the full-size Airbelt D with the parquet brush or combination nozzle attached; neither page lists the ET-1 power head for this. Miele lists a park system for vacuuming breaks on the Guard M1; ask how its wand is meant to be stored.
Parking and storage aren't always the same thing. A convenient pause position during cleaning doesn't automatically make the right long-term position, so follow the manual for where the wand should rest long term.
Ask to see the stored setup with the exact head you plan to leave attached. A package with two floorheads also needs a home for the second one. The Guard M1 Cat & Dog, for example, comes with both an SBD 365-3 floorhead and an STB 305-3 Turbobrush, an air-driven brush for pet hair on short-pile carpet.
| Part | What to check | Real example |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Width and depth on the closet floor | Miele lists the Guard M1 Cat & Dog at 19 1/2 × 11 1/8 inches |
| Wand and floorhead | Stored height and where they clip on | SEBO Airbelt E stores them on the underside or back of the body |
| Second floorhead | A floor or shelf spot you can reach | Guard M1 Cat & Dog includes a floorhead and a Turbobrush |
| Small tools | On-board storage or a separate holder | SEBO Airbelt E carries its crevice nozzle, upholstery nozzle and dusting brush on board |
| Cord | Rewind, or a hook for winding | Miele lists one-touch automatic cord rewind on the Guard M1 |
How should I store a canister vacuum hose?
In a loose, unforced loop, the way the manual directs. Avoid tight bends, never set heavy objects on it, and leave room around the connections and controls. An electric hose or handle shouldn't be treated like an ordinary piece of flexible tubing.
Keep the vacuum somewhere dry. A damp closet or a hose that gets crushed every day can turn a convenient purchase into a maintenance problem. If your hose already has a split or a crushed section, we stock replacement SEBO hoses and Miele hoses by model.
Where do the small tools live?
Ideally on the vacuum. SEBO says the Airbelt E keeps a crevice nozzle, an upholstery nozzle and a dusting brush on board, and lists three full-size on-board tools for the Airbelt D. Miele describes a practical compartment with a three-piece accessory set on the Guard M1; the Guard M1 Cat & Dog box lists an upholstery nozzle, a crevice nozzle and a dust brush.
Me: where did the crevice tool go this time?
The crevice tool: on the canister, like always
If a tool clip breaks, replace the clip rather than starting a junk drawer of loose attachments. Check where each tool rides and whether you can reach it without taking the setup apart.

How do I test canister storage before buying?
Put it away yourself, right there in the showroom. Go from cleaning setup to stored setup: collapse the wand if it telescopes, run the cord rewind as instructed and clip each tool into its approved holder.
Then count the steps you're willing to repeat every time. A machine that cleans brilliantly can still be a poor fit if every session ends with reorganizing the closet. And a slightly larger body may be perfectly manageable when the complete arrangement stores neatly.

Canister vacuum storage questions
Can I judge canister storage from the body dimensions alone?
No. The hose, wand, floorheads and stored orientation also take up space.
Should the hose be disconnected for storage?
Follow your model's instructions, because storage arrangements differ. Some canisters are designed to store with the hose and wand attached and parked on the body.
Is the parking position the same as the storage position?
Not always. A park position meant for short breaks while cleaning isn't necessarily the one the manufacturer intends for storage, so check the manual for which to use long term.
How big is the Miele Guard M1 Cat & Dog body?
Miele lists it at 19 1/2 inches wide, 11 1/8 inches deep and 8 7/8 inches tall. Add room for the parked wand, a loose hose loop and the second floorhead.
