A handle with an air valve built in: open the valve to ease off suction at the tool, close it for full power. It joins the suction hose to the telescopic wand, and the adjustment happens under your hand rather than at the machine.
When the valve is handy
Curtains and a delicate rug are the obvious cases. Slide the valve open, finish the job, and close it again.

Switch the vacuum off and take the old handle away from the hose and wand. The hose connection on this one is adjustable, so set it to suit your hose, then check that the valve slides freely before you vacuum.
