Description

Where it fits

Kirby's comparison chart places the C550 with homes that mix carpet and hard floors, and calls it the pick for large homes with multiple levels. It rates the C550 Excellent for deep carpet cleaning, hard floors, pet hair and stairs, and Good for storage convenience. The body of a canister stays on the floor while you carry the hose and wand, and this one weighs 14.5 pounds.

Two ways to clean a bare floor

Move the brush roll switch on the control handle to off, drop the power nozzle to height 1, and you can run the electric nozzle over hard floors. Or swap in the hard floor nozzle: press the nozzle release while lifting the wand, then slide the wand into the new head. The fit is a friction fit, so you will not hear a click. Either way, the 4-speed AirFlow Control dial lets you pull suction down for rugs and delicate surfaces.

Tools that stay with the machine

The duster brush and upholstery tool live in an onboard compartment on the canister. The Turbo Air Brush and crevice tool go in the attachment bag, and the crevice tool also clips to a holster on the wand. Kirby's manual singles out the Turbo Air Brush for embedded pet hair on furniture and for carpeted stairs. A stainless steel adjustable wand, automatic cord rewind, onboard accessory storage and Glide Control steering round out the design.

Routine care

To change the bag on the C550, unplug it, take the hose off the secure hose connect, pull the seal cap from the onboard compartment and raise the bag door. Seal the full bag, lift it out by the collar, and slide a new bag's collar into the shuttle. Do not leave the seal cap on the new bag. The pre-motor filter washes the same way as on Kirby's other Signature Series machines, and the system filter is replaced yearly.

Warranty and where it is made

Kirby's published warranty covers the unit motor and labor for eight years and all other parts and labor for five years, for household use. It excludes expendable parts such as HEPA filters, filter bags, attachments and brush rolls, and warranty work is done by Kirby's own service-center network.
