Kirby V530 Signature Series Premium Upright Vacuum, Carbon Black

The V530 is the upright in Kirby's Signature Series: a bagged upright with an electric Multi-Surface Power Nozzle that cleans carpet properly and still copes with hard floors, stairs and upholstery. At 12.1 pounds it is the lightest of the three Signature Series machines by Kirby's listed weights, and it comes in Carbon Black only.

Who it suits

Kirby's comparison chart points the V530 at homes with mostly carpet and some hard floor, mid-size to large. It rates the V530 Excellent for deep carpet cleaning and for pet hair, Very Good on hard floors and Good on stairs. That matches the design: an upright you pull out and run across a room, with a stretch hose for the stairs and the sofa.

How it handles different floors

The 13.5-inch nozzle has six height settings. The manual's advice is to use the lowest setting that still lets the machine move comfortably, and to go up one level if it feels hard to push. A three-way switch on the handle gives you off, on with the brush roll stopped (for hard floors), and on with the brush roll spinning (for carpet and rugs). When the logo on the nozzle is not lit, the brush roll is off, which is the setting Kirby recommends for bare floors.

The 4-speed AirFlow Control dial changes suction without changing tools. Kirby suggests the lowest setting for drapes and delicate rugs and the highest for wall-to-wall carpet and hardwood, and a display on the machine shows which level you are on. If the V530 grabs a loose rug, the manual says to raise the nozzle or turn the dial down. LumiGuide LEDs in the nozzle light the floor ahead of you.

The hose, the cord and the tools

The 8-foot stretch hose is built into the machine and parks on a magnetic dock. Pull the hose end off the dock while the brush roll is running and the roll shuts off automatically. Pair the hose with the crevice tool, upholstery tool or duster brush for baseboards, fabric and shelves. The 32-foot cord, with quick-release hooks and a clip on the back of the handle, gives a 40-foot cleaning radius.

Looking after it

Kirby's manual sets a simple rhythm. Each month, check the bag-full indicator and the brush roll, and trim wound hair with scissors. The pre-motor foam filter can be rinsed in lukewarm water with no soap, squeezed (not wrung), and left to air dry for at least 24 hours; never run the vacuum with a damp filter. Once a year, replace the system filter, which cannot be washed. Store the V530 standing upright.

Warranty and where it is made

Kirby's published warranty covers the unit motor and labor for eight years and all other parts and labor for five years, for household use. It excludes expendable parts such as HEPA filters, filter bags, attachments and brush rolls, and warranty work is done by Kirby's own service-center network. Does it need a special bag?

Yes. It takes the PureAir HEPA filter bag made for the Signature Series upright, sold here in 3-packs, 6-packs and 9-packs.

Can it clean stairs?

Use the stretch hose with the upholstery tool or crevice tool. Kirby rates its stair cleaning Good, where both canisters rate Excellent.
