Most Connecticut houses own a portable dehumidifier that migrates from the basement to wherever it is needed, and the IDEAL AP140 Pro is built to be used the same way. It rolls on casters, is rated for 1,400 square feet at four air changes an hour under an 8.2-foot ceiling, and moves 824 CFM through a 360-degree multi-layer HEPA filter. It is a big unit, 22 by 25 by 28.5 inches, because moving that much air quietly takes a big filter and a big fan; noise runs from 25.2 dB to 60.3 dB. Controls cover auto, manual, turbo, night mode, a start/stop timer, lock, filter status and the IDEAL AIR PRO app.

Why we like it
- 824 CFM is enough airflow to treat an entire open first floor from one spot, which is cheaper than three small units and quieter than two on turbo.

Think twice if
- You need odor control first. The AP140 Pro's listed filter is HEPA only; the AP40 Pro and AP80 Pro include activated carbon.
- The unit has to fit on a shelf or a narrow landing. At 22 by 25 inches it wants floor space, and the casters want a flat floor.
- The space is a single bedroom. This is far more purifier than one bedroom needs; the AP40 Pro will do it for less.

A factory-sealed, unused unit can be returned within 30 days with the buyer paying return shipping; an opened unit is covered through the manufacturer warranty with our help.

Does it have carbon for odors?
The listed filter is a 360-degree multi-layer HEPA filter. For odor-focused use, the AP40 Pro and AP80 Pro list a combined HEPA and activated-carbon filter.

Is it loud?
