Think of the Titan T1400 as the small space heater of vacuums, the kind you keep in the mudroom: nine pounds, easy to carry, and in the room where you need it before the big machine is out of the closet. It has a 1,400-watt motor, four-stage HEPA filtration, a 2.0-liter bag with a full-bag indicator, a 16-foot retractable cord, variable electronic suction, a 360-degree hose swivel, anti-scratch rubber wheels and onboard tools. It is listed for carpet and hard floors, though its strength is hard floors, stairs and everything above them.

- Variable electronic suction turns it down for drapes and rugs and up for the stair runner, from the machine rather than a hose vent.

Think twice if
- Your house has wall-to-wall carpet. The T1400 has no powered nozzle; the T9400 or T9500 does that work.
- You clean a big open floor from one outlet. Sixteen feet of cord is a room at a time; the T9400 has 24 feet and the T9500 has 28.
- You want a bagless machine. This is a bagged canister with a 2.0-liter bag, and we think that is a feature.
