Which Kirby Signature Series Vacuum Is Right for You? V530, C530, C550 and Their Bags

V530 upright, or the C530 or C550 canister? Match a Kirby Signature Series vacuum to your floors and stairs, see what comes in each box, and find the bags and filters that fit.

The Signature Series is Kirby's line of bagged vacuums for stores and online shopping, separate from the Kirby sold through in-home demonstrations. All three models list a 1200-watt suction motor, a 131 CFM airflow rating and PureAir Dual HEPA filtration, so the choice comes down to the floor tool, the body style and the reach.

Kirby designs and engineers the series in Cleveland, Ohio. Manufacturing and assembly happen overseas, and Kirby says plainly that these vacuums are not made in America.

Avon Vacuums is an authorized Kirby dealer and Kirby Service Center. The product facts here come only from the maker's product pages, owner's manuals, comparison chart and warranty, checked in November 2026. Each model links to its product page for the current price, and our Kirby collection has everything we stock for these machines.

What all three share

Each model has a 4-Speed AirFlow Control dial. Kirby suggests level 1 for drapes and fragile or antique rugs, 2 for upholstery and cushions, 3 for everyday carpet and area rugs, and 4 for wall-to-wall carpet and hardwood floors. A display shows the setting and flags a full bag or a filter that's due. All three carry the same 8-year limited warranty; see them side by side in our Signature Series collection.

V530 upright: for homes that are mostly carpet

The V530 is the only upright and, at 12.1 pounds, the lightest model by the published figures. Kirby aims it at mid-size to large homes with mostly carpet, and rates it Excellent for deep carpet cleaning, pet hair, reach and storage.

A three-way switch on the handle runs it. Up is off. The middle position runs suction with the brush roll stopped, for hard floors and hose work. Down starts the brush roll for carpet and rugs. The 13.5-inch nozzle has six heights, and the manual says to use the lowest one that still moves comfortably.

For stairs and furniture, an 8-foot stretch hose parks on a magnetic dock, and a running brush roll stops when you pull the hose free. No wand is listed in the box, and the manual warns that over-stretching the hose can tip the unit. Kirby rates the V530 Good on stairs, where both canisters rate Excellent.

With a 32-foot cord, Kirby lists a 40-foot cleaning radius, the longest in the series.

For bare floors, the manual says to use the middle switch position and nozzle height 1. When the vacuum is on and the Kirby logo on the nozzle is not lit, you're on the hard-floor setting.

C550 canister: the most versatile of the three

Kirby designed the C550 for "maximum versatility and performance." Its chart rates it Excellent for deep carpet cleaning, hard floors, pet hair and stairs, and names it for large homes on several levels. It comes in Pure Platinum or Kirby Blue.

Its 13.5-inch Multi-Surface Power Nozzle, with six heights and LumiGuide LEDs, rides on a stainless steel adjustable wand, and a switch on the handle turns the brush roll on and off. For bare floors, switch the brush off and set height 1, or push the wand into the included Hard Floor Nozzle.

It is the only model with the Turbo Air Brush in the box, which the manual calls ideal for embedded pet hair on furniture and for carpeted stairs. The duster brush and upholstery tool store on board. The 24-foot cord rewinds automatically, and Kirby lists a 37-foot cleaning radius.

C530 canister: for hard floors and area rugs

Kirby calls the C530 ideal for homes with mostly hard floors, area rugs and small carpeted rooms. Its chart rates it Excellent on hard floors and stairs, Very Good for pet hair and Good for deep carpet cleaning, and names it for buyers who want premium cleaning at a lower price.

Its 11-inch Turbo Nozzle is air-powered, with no brush motor listed and a single height setting. If it's hard to push on carpet, slide the air release valve on the nozzle up. A Hard Floor Nozzle is included. Kirby doesn't list LumiGuide LEDs or a brush on/off button for the C530, and the Turbo Air Brush is optional.

At 58.2 dBA, the C530 is the quietest of the three. Like the C550, it has a stainless steel adjustable wand, automatic cord rewind, onboard tool storage and a 37-foot cleaning radius.

Which bags and filters fit each model?

Kirby makes one set of supplies for the upright and another for both canisters. The V530 takes a 3.6-liter bag, and the C530 and C550 take a 4.1-liter bag. Every bag pack includes one fresh pre-motor filter per three bags.

Each item is listed only for the models shown, and each box front says whether it fits upright or canister vacuums. In the maker's photos, upright boxes and bag collars are light blue and canister ones are green. Browse them in our Kirby bags and Kirby filters and care kits collections.

What each part does

  • PureAir HEPA filter bag: holds the dirt. Kirby says the bags help capture fine dust, and the PureAir Seal helps contain captured dirt during bag changes.
  • Pre-motor filter: washable foam that traps large debris and protects the motor.
  • HEPA system filter: sits after the motor and captures carbon dust. Replace it once a year; it can't be washed.

The manuals describe the filtration as full-system HEPA, independently certified to ASTM F3150, and ask owners to use only genuine Kirby bags, filters, parts and accessories.

Which pack makes sense?

  • New machine: you start with four bags, one installed and three spares, so there's no rush.
  • 3-pack: the smallest top-up, with one pre-motor filter.
  • 6-pack: two pre-motor filters, so one can dry while the other works.
  • 9-pack: the largest bag pack, with three pre-motor filters.
  • Care kit: nine bags, three pre-motor filters and the yearly system filter in one box.

The manuals give no bag schedule: check the fill level monthly and change the bag when the Bag Full light comes on. Prices change, so compare packs on their product pages. Shipping is free on U.S. orders over $75.

Signature Care Kits: the yearly supplies in one box

There is one Signature Care Kit for the V530 and one for the C530 and C550. Each holds nine PureAir HEPA filter bags, three pre-motor filters and one HEPA system filter, and Kirby describes it as a way to keep routine maintenance supplies together.

Because the system filter is a yearly part, the kit fits best about a year in, or when the filter light comes on. Before that, a bag pack is enough. The kit holds supplies only, with no tools.

Kirby's warranty and how to register

The limited warranty covers the registered owner with proof of purchase from The Kirby Company or an authorized Kirby seller, under ordinary household use. In Kirby's words:

  • Eight years, motor and labor: an authorized Kirby Service Center will repair or replace a defective motor at no cost.
  • Five years, parts and labor: the same for other defective parts, excluding expendable components.

The expendables are HEPA filters, disposable filter bags, attachments (upholstery tool, duster brush, Turbo accessory and crevice tool) and brush rolls. Also excluded: non-genuine parts and damage they cause, non-authorized service, normal maintenance, commercial use, and machines bought or used outside the United States. The warranty is non-transferable.

Register with the QR code in the Quick Start Guide or on Kirby's registration page; registering activates the warranty, Kirby says. Keep your receipt too.

All warranty work must be done by an authorized Kirby Service Center; Kirby's locator lists them. Avon Vacuums is an authorized Kirby Service Center, so Kirby warranty repairs can be done at our own repair bench in Avon, Connecticut. Warranty questions go to The Kirby Company at 216-529-6177 or consumer@kirby.com, and the manuals say to call Kirby, not return the vacuum to the store, for a product problem. Read the full warranty before you buy.

Buying from an authorized dealer, or elsewhere

Kirby sells the Signature Series through retail partners, appliance and electronics stores, local vacuum shops, online marketplaces and kirby.com. Where you buy affects three things:

  • The warranty. It requires proof of purchase from Kirby or an authorized seller, and it doesn't pass to a second owner.
  • Returns. Kirby's 30-day Home Trial covers only vacuums bought directly from the company. A store purchase follows that store's return policy, which Kirby suggests asking about before you buy, so ask us about ours.
  • Genuine supplies. Kirby says authorized locations carry genuine bags and accessories for all three models.

Avon Vacuums is an authorized Kirby dealer and Kirby Service Center, and Kirby keeps a locator of authorized retailers if you want to check a seller.

Try a Kirby in our Avon shop

Our Avon, Connecticut shop has Kirby demo machines you can try. As Kirby itself notes, a store visit lets you examine the build and finish up close before you buy. Worth testing:

  • Push it on carpet at the lowest height that still moves comfortably (V530 and C550).
  • Turn the airflow dial from level 1 to level 4 and feel the difference.
  • Lift the 12.1-pound upright, then try a canister whose body stays on the floor.
  • Try the tools: pull the V530's hose off its dock, or fit a canister's wand into the Hard Floor Nozzle.
  • Open the bag door and see how the bag's collar slides into its holder.

Call (860) 678-0011 before your visit to ask which models are set up. Avon Vacuums has been family-owned since 1972, and our shop repairs vacuums too.

Care tips from Kirby's manuals

The maintenance schedule is short. Unplug the vacuum before any of it.

Every month

  • Brush roll: trim wound hair or thread with scissors along the guide track. Kirby also mentions an optional detangling tool.
  • Bag: check the fill level. The Bag Full light can also come on with certain attachments; Kirby says that's normal, and it should go off once the tool comes off.
  • Pre-motor filter: tap off loose debris, rinse it under lukewarm water with no soap, squeeze without wringing, and air-dry it for at least 24 hours, with no hair dryer or radiator. Or fit a fresh one from a bag pack.
  • Bag chamber and hose: wipe out the chamber and check the hose for holes or tears.

Once a year

  • System filter: replace it. Then, with the vacuum plugged in and on, hold the filter reset indicator for 2 seconds until it flashes and goes off.
  • Bag door seal: check it for dryness or cracks.

Every time

  • Never run the vacuum with a wet or damp pre-motor filter. Kirby warns this can permanently damage the motor and void the warranty.
  • Don't run it without the bag and filters in place. The bag door won't close without a bag.
  • Store it upright on a flat, stable surface, indoors in a cool, dry place.

Changing a V530 bag: pivot the bag holder (Kirby calls it the shuttle) down, pull the seal tab to close the bag, then lift it out by its collar.

Weak suction, or hard to push

The manuals list four causes of lost suction: a full bag, dirty pre-motor or system filters, a blockage, or an open bag door. If the nozzle grabs a loose rug or is hard to push, raise the nozzle height (V530 and C550) or slide up the C530's air release valve, and turn the airflow dial down.

For the cleaning-efficiency result Kirby quotes from ASTM F608 testing, the manuals use nozzle height 1 with the dial at level 4, or the C530's Turbo Nozzle at level 4.

Drapes and delicate rugs

Kirby suggests level 1 for drapes and fragile or antique rugs, but follow each rug's care label, since some shouldn't be brushed at all. To stop the brush, use the V530's middle switch position or the C550's handle switch. The C530's Turbo Nozzle is air-powered, so use its Hard Floor Nozzle or a hand tool. Our guide to vacuum features that can damage delicate rugs explains what to check.

Kirby Signature Series buying checklist

  1. List your floors: carpet, hard floors and rugs, with care labels for anything delicate.
  2. Count your stairs and choose between an upright and a canister.
  3. Measure your longest run from an outlet against the 40-foot and 37-foot cleaning radii.
  4. Check storage space for an upright, or for a canister with its hose and wand.
  5. Confirm what's in the box, especially the Hard Floor Nozzle and Turbo Air Brush.
  6. Buy from Kirby or an authorized seller and keep the receipt.
  7. Register the vacuum with Kirby to activate the warranty.
  8. Note which supplies fit: upright ones for the V530, canister ones for the C530 and C550.

Kirby Signature Series questions

Where are Kirby Signature Series vacuums made?

Kirby says these vacuums are designed and engineered in America, by the company in Cleveland, Ohio, with manufacturing and assembly overseas by partners in Europe and Asia. It states plainly that they are not made in America. The model Kirby says it still makes in Cleveland is the Avalir Platinum S3, a different machine.

Do Kirby Signature Series bags fit older Kirby models?

Kirby lists these bags only for the three Signature Series machines: the upright bags for the V530 and the canister bags for the C530 and C550. It sells separate filter bags under its Avalir supplies. Kirby doesn't say whether the new bags fit older machines, so check with us before you buy for an older Kirby.

Do the C530 and C550 use the same bags and filters?

Yes. Kirby lists the canister bag packs, system filter and care kit for both, and both take a 4.1-liter bag. The V530 uses its own upright bags and filter.

How often should I change the HEPA system filter?

Once a year, per Kirby's maintenance schedule; the filter light also comes on when the filter reaches the end of its life. It can't be washed. After fitting a new one, hold the filter reset indicator for 2 seconds. If you replace it early, the manuals have you hold the indicator for 5 seconds first.

Can I wash the pre-motor filter?

Yes. Rinse the foam filter under lukewarm water with no soap, squeeze it gently and let it air-dry for at least 24 hours. Never put it back damp. Every bag pack includes new pre-motor filters, so you can fit a fresh one while the washed one dries.

How do I register my Signature Series vacuum?

Scan the QR code in the Quick Start Guide, or enter your serial number on Kirby's registration page. Registering activates the limited warranty, Kirby says: 8 years on the motor and labor, and 5 years on other parts and labor. Keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Does Kirby's 30-day Home Trial apply if I buy from Avon?

No. The Home Trial applies only to vacuums bought directly from The Kirby Company. Purchases from authorized retailers follow the retailer's return policy, Kirby says, so ask us about ours before you buy.

Is the Signature Series the same as the Kirby sold through in-home demonstrations?

No. Kirby's flagship Avalir Platinum S3 is sold only through independent Authorized Distributors, built for in-home demonstrations, and does extra jobs such as shampooing carpets. The Signature Series is the line for stores and online. Kirby lists a 3-year limited warranty for its Home Cleaning System, against 8 years on the motor and 5 on other parts for the Signature Series.

Which model is best for pet hair and stairs?

By Kirby's ratings, the C550 is the only model rated Excellent for both. The V530 is Excellent for pet hair but Good on stairs; the C530 is Very Good for pet hair and Excellent on stairs. The C550 also includes the Turbo Air Brush, which the manual calls ideal for pet hair on furniture and carpeted stairs.

Can I try a Kirby before I buy?

Yes. Our Avon, Connecticut shop has Kirby demo machines. Call (860) 678-0011 before your visit to ask which models are set up.
